Miele Engineer Communication System

Miele, known for its high-quality white goods, operates a team of over 70 engineers who travel nationwide to service and repair appliances. The system I worked on enabled communication between head office and engineers in the field. It delivered daily job schedules and allowed engineers to update job status, record completion details, and submit cost estimates.

When I joined the project, the original developer had left, and the system was in need of crucial maintenance, especially to allow price adjustments, which were locked. All I had to work with was the developers computer and his password. I found the folder of source code and within a day, I compiled the code using Eclipse, implemented the necessary price changes, and got the test environment running.

From there, I took over full maintenance, streamlining the backend, adding new screens, and making the pricing more easily adjustable.

The original system, appeared to be a Java learning project for its developer, it utilized a wide array of technologies: the front end was built with Swing, the backend was container-managed with entity beans, and the middleware featured SOAP, XML, Ajax tag libraries, JBoss, Tomcat, JSPs, and Servlets. I refined and optimized these components, ensuring smoother operation and easier future updates.
